Awning-ology
From the first day that an awning was installed on a recreational vehicle we have had a love-hate relationship with them. On one hand, there’s nothing like sitting under the awning, sipping on your favorite beverage, and talking with friends shaded from the intensity of the sun. On the other hand, we roll up the awning on the side of our recreational vehicle and travel down the open road praying that a microburst of wind doesn’t inflate it and tear it off.
Even if you’ve never had an awning unfurl on you while traveling, most of us have either witnessed it on the side of the road or talked to someone that it happened to. Awning damage is the third highest insurance claim made in the recreational industry, so it is no wonder that most insurance providers offer separate awning coverage.
What Causes An Awning To Unfurl?
We can only sum this up with one word: Physics: the science of matter and energy. Matter in this case being an 18’ long awning and energy being a 60-mph microburst. When a powerful side wind contacts the side of the RV, the air is diverted in all directions, including upward into the retracted awning. As the air pushes under the rolled up awning, it starts to inflate, and the power of the wind compounds until the awning completely unfurls. All awnings have some kind of a locking device. With manual awnings it is usually a small lever that is turned to the lock position, with power awnings it is the electric motor. These locking devices are no match for the power created from these microburst.
Failed Attempts
A huge misconception about awning protection is that if the arms of the awning are wrapped with Velcro or a Bungee Cord the awning will never unfurl. Nothing could be further from the truth! If the locking mechanism of the awning fails, the awning will simply unroll in place when it is hit by a strong wind. Although these types of products are inexpensive, they simply do not protect the awning while traveling.
Rv AwningClamp Is The Solution
The Rv AwningClamp was developed by our team of engineers to overcome the inherited problem of awning unfurling. By clamping the middle of the awning, we are taking away the power developed by these strong micro-bursts of air and keeping the awning securely in place. The adjustable links of the Rv AwningClamp ensures a perfect fit on any awning. With a great look and easy installation, Rv AwningClamp allows you to travel without any worries.
